Murten, the walled town on the lake

Murten, or Morat, sits in western Switzerland, in the bilingual canton of Fribourg, on Lake Murten. You come for the old town inside the wall, the castle terrace and a harbour boat. This is not a lido how-to.

Berntor, Murten

Where it sits

The town faces Lake Murten. Bern is the federal-city neighbour; Gruyères sits farther into the Fribourg hills. French and German share the place name: Murten / Morat.

What you’ll see

The old town keeps the Berntor gate, alleys, baroque townhouses and a main street with arcades. The fortified wall is a town-wall walk, not a mountain hike. The castle has a terrace toward the lake.

Boats leave from the harbour on Lake Murten. Duration is not a fact on this page; check the day’s timetable. There is no swimming lesson here.

A simple day

Arrive at Murten. Walk the gates and the wall, then the castle terrace. If a boat is running, use the harbour. Return to the station. Bern and Gruyères are other days in the same west of the country.

When a tour is listed, you book it on GetYourGuide. Booking, price and space live there.

Getting there

The town and the harbour share the same small centre. Plan the ride on sbb.ch.
