Aarau is the capital of the canton of Aargau in northern Switzerland, on the Aare. Schweiz Tourismus places the old town close to the station, with shops and cafés along the Stadtbach and under arcades. This note stays with that town fabric — gables, tower, river bridge — not a Lenzburg–Habsburg castle circuit and not a Wellness Pass spa day.
Painted gables and Obertorturm
The landmark Obertorturm carries a historic tower clock. Above the lanes, painted roof gables (“Aarau gables”) show ornaments, professional emblems and family coats of arms; former rope hoists once served the upper floors. On the church square a fountain with baroque Justitia completes the centre picture.
Stadtbach, walls, Chain Bridge
A classic foot loop runs past the town church, the Haldenring with old city walls, the castle mill, the Chain Bridge over the Aare and the former customs house. That is riverside town fabric and viewpoint — not a swim how-to and not a hiking brief.
Optional culture
The Aargauer Kunsthaus presents a broad Swiss art collection (tourism wording softened here — no “most comprehensive” ranking). Further culture names include the city museum, Naturama, Alte Reithalle and Tuchlaube. Pick one roof if you want culture; leave scavenger-hunt apps and day-pass products off this page.
Arrive by rail, close the loop in the old town, and plan any onward leg on sbb.ch. Hub framing: day trips from Zurich; movement on getting around and the Swiss Travel Pass overview.
