Interlaken has two proper SBB stations — Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West. There is no “Interlaken Central.” Your next ride decides which one matters.
Ost is the gateway to the Jungfrau Region: the Berner Oberland Bahn toward Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen starts here. The Harderbahn valley station is a short walk across the Aare; Lake Brienz boats leave nearby. The Luzern–Interlaken Express is framed with Ost as its Interlaken end.
West sits by the Lake Thun boat landing and on the corridor toward Spiez, Thun and Bern. If your day is a Thun lake cruise or onward toward Bern, West is often the simpler stop. Many long-distance trains serve both — check your ticket and the SBB app for the exact station name.
Choose Interlaken Ost when…
You are heading into the Jungfrau Region on the Berner Oberland Bahn toward Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. You want Harder Kulm (Harderbahn valley station is a short walk / across the Aare from Ost; funicular about 10 minutes). You need Lake Brienz boats (landing near Ost) or arrive/leave on the Luzern–Interlaken Express framed with Ost.
Choose Interlaken West when…
Your day is a Lake Thun cruise (port next to West) or you continue toward Spiez, Thun and Bern on that corridor. West is not “the secondary station” — it is simply the better door for Thun-side plans.
Practical tip
Many InterCity and regional services call at both. Always read the exact station name on your ticket and in the SBB app. Walking between Ost and West is possible along the Aare, but with luggage or tight connections, pick the station that matches your onward ride.
